A Review by Tam Fiofori

The first impressions of this hefty and imposing book are of its outstanding artistic quality: the gold lettering and deep red (the colour of the Benin monarchy) of its cover, the exquisite design of the inside pages, and the many reproductions of astonishing works of Benin art, some famous and others less well-known. No surprise, then, that it is brought to us by Oriiz U. Onuwaje, the graphic designer with an impressive track record in international advertising as well as magazine and book design and production. (His upscale lifestyle magazine Masterpiece – the art of fine living is another example.)

The Benin Monarchy: An Anthology of Benin History is a magnificently illustrated record of the glories of the Kingdom and Kings of Benin. A mighty tome, comprising 590 pages and weighing in at 7 kg, it contains contributions from eighteen scholars and comes to us courtesy of Mr. Oriiz U. Onuwaje, who developed the content and co-produced with Capt. Dr. Idahosa Wells Okunbo.

Review by Professor Efosa B Oseghale

Commissioned by Royal Warrant of Appointment to His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, this book is divided into three parts, consisting of a total of eighteen chapters, authored by twenty-four essayists cum contributors including historians, artists and other professionals. Contributions were also made by other traditional palace and sundry non-palace sources. Bound in a striking red, the work is huge in both size and weight, and crammed with images of ancient, medieval and contemporary Benin art forms as well as impressive commemorative photos. It is, in fact, an art gallery in book form.
